The lifting and handling problems associated with slab and plate handling in the metals industry are familiar to Street Crane as the company was originally situated in Sheffield which was England’s ‘Steel City’.

The steel and aluminium industries in particular have a need to lift slabs and billets by crane often at high rates of handling.
In most applications the best solution is to incorporate a slab grab into the crane control system such that grab opening and closing and a slewing mechanism can be operated from the crane cab pendant or remote controller.

Plate poses different problems and in the steel industry magnet beams can be permanently roped under the crane or suspended from the hook. Another solution, which Street has supplied for aluminium and steel, is vacuum lifting.

Grabs and on the hook devices can cause rope deviation on standard hoists and open winch hoists such as the Street heavyduty VX hoist are recommended.
